Where's the Fuse for My Cigarette Lighter?

I’m trying to track down the fuse for my cigarette lighter, and I could really use some help. It seems like such a simple thing, but I’ve had a tough time finding specific info for my vehicle model.

Here are a few details:

  • Vehicle make and model: BMW E39
  • Problem: The cigarette lighter isn’t working, and I suspect it’s the fuse.

I’ve looked in the manual, but it’s not clear on which fuse corresponds to the lighter. If anyone has insights or experiences working with the fuse box for different car models—like how it’s laid out or even any diagrams—you would really help me out!

Also, if you could share where your fuse box is located in your car model (especially for popular ones like the Jeep Wrangler or Freightliner), I think that would be beneficial for everyone else here as well. Let’s get to the bottom of this together! Thanks in advance for your input!

Any tips for testing the fuse or what tools to use would also be appreciated!

Hey, I had the same issue! First, check your fuse box. The fuse for the cigarette lighter is usually labeled ‘Cigarette’ or ‘Power Outlet’.

I’ve heard that wiring faults can also cause this problem. Have you checked the wiring behind the lighter? Sometimes they detach or corrode.

Cigarette lighter issues can be tricky! I once had to replace both the fuse and the lighter itself. Make sure you test it before replacing parts!

Right? You might be shocked at how often it’s just a blown fuse. A simple multimeter can help diagnose before replacing anything!

I had a similar problem. Sometimes the lighter gets stuck and doesn’t pop back out. Check if it’s jammed and not making a connection.

Honestly, it’s often the simplest things that cause the most trouble! Just check for any debris around the socket area first.

Great point! Getting it stuck happens more than we realize, especially if it’s used often without cleaning.

Absolutely! It’s surprising how many people overlook that. A good ground is essential for the circuit to work properly.

Don’t forget to check the ground connection as well. A bad ground can cause all sorts of electrical problems!

Troubleshooting can be annoying, but it’s satisfying when you find the issue yourself. Just stay patient and methodical!

I once thought my lighter was broken, but it turned out it was just my friend using it as a cell phone charger… An unexpected twist!

So true! Plus, it saves money. Do you think some people just give up too soon?

Haha, that’s a classic! Sometimes it’s the people, not the devices. Keep it in check!

If your cigarette lighter isn’t working, the first thing to try is checking the fuse. Usually, the fuse box is under the dashboard or near the driver’s seat. Look in your vehicle’s manual for the exact location.

When you locate the fuse box, look for a diagram on the cover or inside the manual. The cigarette lighter fuse is typically labeled. Make sure you get the right amperage for replacement.

Great point! I found mine has a chart too. It makes it so much easier to find the right one!

Thanks for the tip! I always forget where my fuse box is. I’ll have to dig out the manual to find out.

I didn’t think about safety! Thanks for that reminder, alyssa86. I usually forget to take the keys out when I’m working on my car.

Safety first! Before you check the fuses, make sure the vehicle is turned off and the keys are removed. You don’t want any accidents while handling electrical components!
