Clicking Noise When Turning the Steering Wheel - Help Needed!

I’ve been experiencing a clicking noise when I turn the steering wheel in my car, and it’s starting to drive me crazy! It’s more noticeable during sharp turns and sometimes when I go over bumps. I’m not sure if this is related to the CV joints, strut mounts, or maybe something else entirely.

Here are a few details:

  • Make/Model: 2015 Honda Civic
  • Mileage: 75,000 miles
  • Maintenance: Recently had an oil change, but nothing else has been touched.

I’ve read that a loose component might be the culprit or maybe something in the steering system itself.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? What steps should I take to troubleshoot this? I’m hoping for some advice on how to diagnose this effectively or recommend any quick fixes before heading to a mechanic. Any tips or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

I have had a similar issue with my car. It turned out to be worn CV joints causing the clicking noise. Have you checked those yet?

Thanks for the tip! I haven’t looked at the CV joints yet. Any ideas on how to check them?

Checking CV joints is simple! Just look for any tearing in the rubber boots or listen for clicking when turning sharply. It can save you from bigger issues later!

I’ve also heard that a failing steering rack can produce a clicking noise. Have you had any issues with power steering?

No, my power steering seems fine. Might the noise still come from the steering rack?

Absolutely! If the steering rack is worn out, it can create noises regardless of the power steering system. It’s worth investigating.

I had a similar noise and it turned out to be a simple bolt that had come loose in the steering assembly. Maybe check for loose parts too!

Wow, I wouldn’t have thought of that! What kind of tools do I need to check those bolts?

You’ll typically just need a socket set to tighten any loose bolts. Just make sure to check your vehicle manual for specific sizes!

While you all focus on the mechanics, don’t forget that sometimes weird noises can just be your car’s way of complaining! They have personalities too, right?

Haha! That’s one way to think about it! But we should still solve the noise before my car decides to ‘express’ itself more dramatically!

True! Ignoring it might lead to expensive repairs down the line. Just reflecting on past experiences, I’ve learned to address these noises as soon as possible.

I had a similar issue with my car! That clicking noise could be related to your CV joints or even something with the steering components. When does it happen? Turning left, right, or both?

Great point! I’d also suggest checking for any debris stuck in the wheel well. Sometimes it’s just as simple as that.

It might sound silly, but try to notice if it coincides with any bumps on the road. If the noise gets louder or changes with different speeds, it could mean it’s more serious!

Exactly! If that’s the case, it could indicate worn out bearings or something with the suspension that should be checked out ASAP.

I once ignored a clicking issue too long, and it ended up costing a fortune! Definitely keep an ear out for any changes in the sound. Better safe than sorry!

Have you checked the steering fluid? Low fluid can sometimes make weird noises when turning. It’s a simple fix if that’s the case!

Good suggestion! Also, if you can, try to replicate the sound when parked. Sometimes it helps pinpoint the issue better.
