Can Anyone Share Their Experience with Window Tint Exemption Stickers in NY?

Seeking Advice on Window Tint Exemption Stickers in NY

I’ve recently gotten some tinted windows in my car for medical reasons, and I’m looking into getting a window tint exemption sticker in New York. I’ve heard that there are specific regulations and procedures to follow, but they seem a bit confusing.

Here’s what I’m hoping to learn:

  • Application Process: What are the steps to apply for the exemption? Is it straightforward, or are there pitfalls I should be aware of?
  • Requirements: What documentation or medical proof do I need to provide? Are there specific forms I need to fill out?
  • Personal Experiences: If you’ve been through this process, what was your experience like? Any tips on dealing with the DMV?
  • Placement of the Sticker: Once I get the exemption sticker, where exactly should I put it on my car? I’ve read mixed information online about this.

I would really appreciate any insights, advice, or personal stories that could help me navigate this process. Thank you for taking the time to share!

I recently applied for the window tint exemption sticker in NY, and the process was straightforward. You’ll need your vehicle’s registration, a doctor’s note confirming your condition, and a completed application form. The fee was around $10.

That’s great info, David! Can you share where you found the application form? I want to make sure I get all the right documents.

Hey, I’m in the same boat as you both. I’m curious if the form is available online or is it only at DMV offices? I’d rather avoid a trip if possible.

It’s online! Just go to the NY DMV website and look for the ‘Window Tint Exemption’ section. You’ll find everything you need there including the form to print out.

Thanks, Gregory! I think most of us appreciate not having to go to the DMV if we don’t have to. Any tips for filling out the form?

Make sure you fill it out completely and double-check your doctor’s note is included. Sometimes the DMV can be picky about missing info, so better safe than sorry!

Good point, Clark! How long did it take for you to receive the sticker after applying?

Two to three weeks? That’s not too bad! I’m glad it’s a simple process overall. Anyone have any experience with the renewal process?

It took about 2-3 weeks for me. I was kinda anxious, but it eventually arrived in the mail. Just hang tight and you should be good!

I believe the renewal is similar, but you just need to provide updated documentation. Everything else should remain the same. Keep an eye on when your sticker expires to avoid a gap!

Great advice! I hope it lasts longer than my kids’ interest in their vegetables… which is not long at all!

Haha, Jennifer! I can relate! But seriously, did anyone have issues with the DMV regarding their applications? I’ve heard mixed stories about how strict they can be.

I had a bit of a back and forth, they wanted more details on my condition. I recommend being prepared to provide any info they might ask for just in case.

I’m glad you’re asking about this! In New York, you can get exemption stickers if you have certain medical conditions like photosensitivity or skin disorders. It’s advisable to check the DMV website for detailed eligibility requirements and necessary documentation.

That’s really helpful! Thank you! I guess it pays to be thorough. What happens if they deny the application?

Hey, bcosta! From my experience, you usually need a detailed letter from your healthcare provider, explaining your condition and why you need the tint. I suggest checking with your doctor first!

Thanks, julia29! I wondered if it was just a simple note. Do you know what specific medical conditions are usually accepted?

I was also curious about how strict the DMV is with documentation. Do they require specific forms from the doctor or just a note?

The common ones are lupus, albinism, and rare skin conditions that react badly to sunlight. You should also ask about any recent updates on guidelines directly from the DMV.
